Special Features:

HMS Formidable combines a selection of robust column-distilled rums with long tropical cask maturation. The rums are drawn from the lower plates of a traditional twin-column Coffey still and mature for nine to twelve years in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before being blended.

The name recalls Admiral Rodney's flagship at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. This 0.7-litre bottling has an alcohol content of 40% and comes in dark green gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, honeycomb and vinous prune mingle with cigar leaf and resinous oak. Cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper complement vanilla and a tarry chocolate ice cream note.
• Palate: The palate is medium- to full-bodied and dry. Warming baking spices and pepper meet honeycomb, cocoa, caramel, vanilla and boozy, vinous red wine notes. A maple syrup-like richness balances the oak tannins.
• Finish: Cocoa butter, dry oak, boozy wine notes and nutmeg linger on the finish. A very delicate smoky nuance accompanies the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

St. Lucia Distillers is based in the Roseau Valley on Saint Lucia. The company was established in 1972 through the merger of the island's last two distilleries. The Barnard family and Geest brought their production together at the present site in the west of the island.

The distillery uses both pot stills and continuous column stills. Only column-distilled rums are used for Admiral Rodney. Drawing spirit from the lower plates of the Coffey still produces particularly characterful rums suited to longer maturation. The selection and subsequent blending of these rums shape the distinctive style of each bottling.
