Special Features:
Amrut Expedition is a fifteen-year-old Indian single malt made from Indian six-row barley. It matured for eight years in a Pedro-Ximénez sherry butt, followed by a further seven years in an ex-bourbon cask. It was bottled at 62.8% in September 2024. Such prolonged maturation is particularly demanding in India’s warm climate, with its high evaporation losses.
The release is limited worldwide to 75 numbered bottles. The set offered here contains the bottle holding 0.7 litres and two miniatures holding 0.05 litres each, giving a total volume of 0.8 litres. Both miniatures also contain Expedition at 62.8%. The handcrafted and hand-painted presentation box combines metal and wood. The set also includes a handcrafted silver serving measure, two crystal glasses, an NFC tag and an authenticity card.
The sequence of casks shapes a sherry-led, woody and spicy character with dark, syrupy impressions, vanilla, dried fruit, chocolate and cocoa. Dark jam adds to this profile, while caramel and roasted malt come to the fore on the finish.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose initially centres on truffles with sherry and sugarcane molasses. A fruity note reminiscent of sherbet powder, vanilla pod and sandalwood follow, while delicate oak remains in the background. The aroma feels velvety and lively.
- Palate: The palate initially brings chocolate with sherry; the mid-palate feels delicate and silky. Coarsely cracked black pepper soon provides a sharp contrast. Vanilla, dried fruit and fruit jam then give way to delicate oak and bitter cocoa. The texture remains exceptionally soft and velvety.
- Finish: The whisky stimulates salivation on the finish and leaves a clear impression of bitter cocoa. The long finish also reveals caramel and roasted malt, accompanied by cocoa and soft vanilla.
Distillery/Bottler:
Amrut Distilleries was founded in Bangalore by J. N. Radhakrishna in 1948 and was initially named Amrut Laboratories. Following the founder’s death in 1976, his son Neelakanta Rao Jagdale took over the business. A site in Kumbalgodu was established in 1986. The international story of the distillery’s single malt began with the debut of Amrut Indian Single Malt in Glasgow in 2004.
Expedition commemorates the company’s 75th anniversary while also honouring Neelkanth Rao Jagdale, whose work established Indian single malt internationally. His son, Rakshit N. Jagdale, leads the family business as Managing Director. Amrut Distilleries produces Expedition and bottles the whisky as its own official bottling.
