Special Features:
A ruby port finish sets Angel's Envy apart from bourbon matured exclusively in new oak. The whiskey typically spends four to six years in new, charred, 53-US-gallon American white oak casks. The whiskeys are then blended and transferred to 60-US-gallon port casks from Portugal for further maturation. This finish lasts up to six months, with the desired flavour profile determining its duration rather than a fixed timetable. A further blending takes place before bottling.
The two cask types combine bourbon character with wine-like nuances. Vanilla, toasted oak and dark fruit shape the aromatic profile. Raisins, toasted nuts and dark chocolate complement the sweetness of maple syrup. The whiskey is bottled at 43.3% in a 0.7-litre bottle, without added colouring or chill filtration. It comes without gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Subtle vanilla appears on the nose alongside raisins, maple syrup and toasted nuts.
- Palate: On the palate, vanilla combines with ripe fruit and maple syrup, while toast and dark chocolate provide a roasted, bittersweet contrast.
- Finish: Sweetness lingers through the clean finish. A subtle Madeira note gradually fades.
Distillery/Bottler:
Angel's Envy is based in Louisville, Kentucky. The brand originated with Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson, a member of the Bourbon Hall of Fame. He applied the Scotch whisky practice of additional maturation in former wine casks to bourbon. The name also alludes to cask maturation: while the portion lost to evaporation is known as the Angel's Share, Henderson joked after tasting the finished whiskey that, this time, the angels had not kept the better share.
In 2016, Angel's Envy opened the first fully operational whiskey distillery on Louisville's Whiskey Row since Prohibition. Owen Martin has been Master Distiller since autumn 2022. His work encompasses maturation, blending and the selection of additional finishing casks for the core range and limited releases. Louisville Distilling Company is responsible for producing and bottling this bourbon.
