With Black River Casks, Appleton Estate pays tribute to the river whose limestone-filtered water is used to make its rum. Created by Joy Spence, the blend brings together selected pot and column still rums, all aged for at least 15 years in Jamaica’s tropical climate. The age statement therefore refers to the youngest rum in the blend, not an average age.

Maturation takes place in selected American oak casks that previously held bourbon. This full-bodied rum is bottled at 43% without added flavourings. Its copper colour has golden highlights. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging; the rum can be enjoyed neat or over ice.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Roasted almonds and hazelnuts emerge first on the nose. Orange peel and vanilla follow, accompanied by subtle hints of roasted coffee and molasses.
• Palate: On the palate, roasted hazelnuts and dark chocolate meet juicy orange. Pronounced vanilla and caramel notes complete the flavour.
• Finish: Delicate spice notes mingle with fruit and subtle oak on the finish. The rum finally fades with lingering creaminess.

Distillery/Bottler:

Appleton Estate lies in the Nassau Valley in the heart of Jamaica. The first documented distillation on the estate dates to 1749. Its rums are still produced on this single estate today. The limestone landscape and natural water source are as much a part of the location as its tropical maturation climate.

For fermentation, Appleton Estate combines molasses with limestone-filtered spring water and its own cultivated yeast. The molasses is sourced through a local industry association. Different distillates are then produced in copper pot stills and distillation columns. The pot still distillates contribute to the characteristic orange peel note. Master Blender Joy Spence, who has held this position since 1997, selects the casks for the blends with her team. The producer is J. Wray & Nephew Ltd.
