Special Features:

This Australian rum's maturation brings together bourbon casks and a Cognac foudre, as well as the climates of Queensland and France. Beenleigh distilled it from fermented molasses in 2014, exclusively in a copper pot still. The rum first matured for five years in former bourbon casks in Australia, then spent another two years in a former Cognac foudre, a large wooden cask, in France. Both American and French oak were used.

La Maison & Velier bottled this seven-year-old rum in 2022 as part of the Transcontinental Rum Line. It bears the series identifier TCRL Line #56 and comes at 48% in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging. Neither sugar nor colouring was added.

Alongside its creamy caramel and dried-fruit character, the rum offers tropical fruit and grapes. Cinnamon complements the fruit with sweet spice, while lightly bitter roasted-coffee notes and a hint of peppermint add further accents.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sweet dried fruit mingles with caramel and vanilla.
• Palate: The palate brings creamy caramel together with sultanas, raisins and tropical fruit. Sweet spice accompanies these flavours.
• Finish: Sweet and spicy impressions linger through the long, fruity finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Beenleigh stands on the Albert River in Queensland and is Australia's oldest operating distillery. Its history began in 1884, when sugar cane farmers John Davy and Francis Gooding acquired a copper still from the steamship SS Walrus. The distillery still produces at the same riverside site. Its production today relies on molasses from a local, family-run sugar mill, rainwater from its own storage, selected yeast and distillation in copper pot stills.

The company behind this bottling is La Maison & Velier, the joint venture established by La Maison du Whisky and Velier in 2017. The French partner has specialised in whisky and rare spirits since 1956, while the Italian company contributes particularly its experience in discovering and selecting rum. The Transcontinental Rum Line draws on rum's historic trading voyages, with origin, distillation and contrasting maturation conditions at the heart of the series.
