Belizean Blue Rare Blend brings together rums from Belize matured for different lengths of time. The spirits average nine years of age, with the oldest components reaching up to 17 years. Maturation takes place entirely in Belize’s tropical climate, using ex-bourbon casks.

The rum starts with molasses from locally grown, Fairtrade-certified sugar cane. Travellers Liquors distils it in column stills and also handles maturation and blending. Rare Blend is Fairtrade-certified and contains neither added sugar nor colouring. Its natural sweetness combines with a bold, spicy character and a delicate coconut note.

The rum is bottled without chill filtration at 48% in a 0.7-litre bottle, presented in a colourful tube. The blue morpho butterfly featured in the design also gives the brand its name. Rare Blend can be enjoyed neat or over ice and also works well in cocktails.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla and coconut mingle with mild spice notes.
• Palate: The palate is bold, sweet and full-bodied. Vanilla, coconut and coffee combine with gentle spices to create an intense, layered flavour.
• Finish: The long finish remains sweet and spicy, with a rich, soft feel.

Distillery/Bottler:

The story of Travellers Liquors begins with a bar in Belize City in 1953. Jaime Omario Perdomo opened it with his wife Perla and named it after the travellers who stopped there on their way into and out of the city. At the time, many bars created their own rum blends to sell. Perdomo also developed such blends, building a spirits business from them. Today, his children and grandchildren carry on the family tradition.

Belizean Blue grew out of a collaboration between Travellers Liquors and Belizean Blue Spirits Company. Co-founder Jacco Kroon had previously selected rum from Belize for his 1731 Fine & Rare range. A visit to Travellers then sparked the idea of creating a dedicated Belizean rum brand. Production combines molasses from Fairtrade-certified sugar cane with a short fermentation, column distillation and subsequent tropical cask maturation.
