Special Features:

Vapour infusion defines how Bombay Sapphire is made: rather than soaking in liquid alcohol, the ten botanicals sit in perforated copper baskets in the path of the rising alcohol vapour. The vapour captures their aromatic oils before being condensed back into liquid. The recipe dates back to 1761. The blend includes juniper from Italy, lemon peel, coriander seeds from Morocco, angelica root from Saxony, orris root, bitter almonds, liquorice, cassia, cubeb pepper and grains of paradise.

In Bombay Sapphire, cubeb pepper and grains of paradise complement the eight botanicals used in Bombay Dry. In the glass, citrus and juniper meet distinctly peppery spice. Bottled at 40% ABV, it suits a Gin & Tonic as well as a Tom Collins and comes here in the blue 1-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, juniper and lemon peel mingle with a sweet note reminiscent of lemon meringue filling. Black and white pepper and other spicy notes add to the aroma, with subtle vegetal tones in the background.
  • Palate: The gin feels mellow and oily on the palate. It opens light and delicate, with a little sweetness, restrained juniper, lemon peel and coriander. Bold pepper and chilli notes then emerge alongside cooked vegetal tones.
  • Finish: Juniper with pine-like notes and a blend of peppery spices linger on the finish. A delicate lavender note complements the spicy aftertaste, which is warming and shows a light touch of coriander.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Bombay Sapphire Distillery is located at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, England. Paper for banknotes was produced on the site for more than two centuries. The historic buildings were restored for use as a distillery, and the visitor centre opened on 1 October 2014. Two intertwining glasshouses, designed with Thomas Heatherwick and his studio, display the botanicals in tropical and temperate conditions.

At Laverstoke, large copper stills operate alongside smaller Carterhead stills. The botanicals are layered by hand in the infusion baskets, with larger ingredients forming a base for the powdered ingredients. Although a computer system monitors distillation, the distillery staff use smell tests to decide where to separate the heads, heart and tails. The Bombay Sapphire brand belongs to Bacardi Limited.
