Special Features:
Rum casks from two Caribbean countries shape this twelve-year-old expression of Cù Bòcan. For Batch #1, the whisky was finished in casks that had previously held rum from Guyana and Barbados. The Barbados casks contribute fresh tropical fruit and maritime notes, while those from Guyana add depth and warming spice. The resulting whisky combines its lightly smoky underlying character with fruit, sea salt, ginger and white chocolate.
The whisky was distilled on 10 December 2010. The first batch was released in May 2023, with 12,000 bottles available worldwide. The batch concept reflects the changing availability of suitable rum casks: future batches are intended to use casks from different Caribbean origins, with their previous contents each imparting a distinct influence on the whisky.
Cù Bòcan 12 Year Old is bottled at 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle. It is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring. This expression comes with gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Fresh mango and a delicate salty note accompany the smoke on the nose. Aromas of ginger cake and the sweetness of marshmallows add to the impression.
- Palate: On the palate, grilled pineapple and salted white chocolate meet a buttery cinnamon note.
- Finish: Fresh tropical fruit and the spice of candied ginger remain present in the finish. Gentle smoke accompanies the lingering flavours.
Distillery/Bottler:
Tomatin is situated in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness. John MacDougall founded the distillery in 1897. Many of its employees have spent their entire working lives there, making the relationship between the distillery and the local community one that spans several generations.
Through Cù Bòcan, Tomatin explores the interplay between gentle smoke and different previous cask contents. The distillery uses lightly peated Scottish barley and distils limited quantities each winter. Alongside the Signature expression, the range includes experimental cask combinations and age-statement whiskies. Creation #2, released in 2019, illustrates this approach: Tomatin used Japanese shochu casks for its maturation.
