Special Features:

Extended cask maturation followed by storage in glass shapes this single-cask Petite Champagne Cognac. Vallein Tercinier distilled it in 1938, after which it spent more than 60 years in a Limousin oak cask. It was then kept for another 20 years in glass demijohns, known as dames-jeannes, in a dry cellar. In September 2022, it was bottled for Through the Grapevine 5.0 without dilution, at its natural strength of 42.6%.

Made from Ugni Blanc grapes, this Cognac is a release of 335 bottles. It combines pronounced fruit with mature impressions of leather, wax and rancio. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging with a black frame and a wooden base. No colouring is added.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose feels fresh yet distinctly mature. Bitter orange and candied apricot initially mingle with dark chocolate. Prune, date, leather, wax and beeswax gradually emerge. As it opens further, mango, guava and rancio appear, accompanied by the heady scent of tuberose and lime blossom.
  • Palate: The palate is full-bodied and intense, opening with supple, fresh orange and apricot notes. Peach then joins the fruit, while a finely grainy texture gently coats the palate. Towards the end, autumnal notes of chestnuts and infused bay leaves develop.
  • Finish: The long, silky finish begins with mango and guava before moving into medicinal hints of arnica, gauze bandages and camphor. Clay and chalk notes emerge later. Retronasally, wax, apricot, orange and toffee come together. The empty glass retains hints of anthracite, mineral notes and candied ginger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Vallein Tercinier is based at Domaine des Forges in Chermignac, in the Saintonge region. Louis Vallein purchased the estate in 1791; around 1850, Georges Vallein established the business as an estate owner, distiller and merchant. His son Paul bought the Camille Dupuis company around 1920 and developed his own Cognac blends. Louis Tercinier later continued the family tradition. After Robert joined in 1947, eight stills produced Cognac for both the family business and other merchant houses over the following three decades.

Through the Grapevine focuses on independently selected Cognacs from small producers and the differences between the individual crus of the Cognac region. The La Maison du Whisky team selects distinctive casks for the range. It belongs to the La Maison & Velier portfolio, while Vallein Tercinier remains the producer responsible for this Cognac.
