For Dutch Courage Dry Gin, Zuidam distils each of the nine botanicals separately. Production involves a total of 14 distillation runs. This separate processing is a distinctive feature of the recipe, allowing each aromatic ingredient to be worked with individually at first.

The ingredients come from several growing regions: juniper and orris root from Italy, coriander from Morocco, and angelica, sweet oranges and fresh whole lemons from Spain. Liquorice root from India, along with cardamom and whole vanilla pods from Madagascar, complete the recipe. The finished gin is bottled at 44.5%; this version contains 1 litre.

Citrus notes, spices and floral accents add further dimensions to its classic juniper profile. A full, supple mouthfeel contrasts with a dry finish. Dutch Courage also works well in cocktails such as a French 75 or Tom Collins.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings together juniper, lemon and aromatic coriander. An underlying citrus note rounds out the aroma.
• Palate: The palate opens with citrus, followed by pronounced spice with violet, anise and pine-like juniper. Subtle walnut and nutmeg notes emerge towards the end.
• Finish: The medium-length finish is dry and clean.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam is an independent family distillery in Baarle-Nassau in the Netherlands. Fred van Zuidam founded it in 1975 with a single copper still and a small production facility covering around 300 square metres. His sons later took over the business.

The production of distillates and extracts, as well as their subsequent processing, remains within the family business. Alongside gin, the range includes genever, liqueurs and whisky. Zuidam uses natural raw materials and no artificial fragrances, colourings or flavourings.
