Maturation entirely in former Marsala casks gives PUNI VINA its distinctive connection to Italian wine culture. The whisky spends five years in European oak casks that previously held Marsala Vergine from Sicily. This is therefore more than just a final wine-cask finish.

Fruity baked goods shape its character, with aromas reminiscent of stollen, panettone and fruitcake. Creamy walnut notes, sultanas and a spicy hint of cinnamon add further detail. Its natural colour is preserved, and it is not chill-filtered. Bottled at 43%, it comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is slightly dry. Blood orange and sultanas combine with cherries steeped in alcohol and a hint of brown sugar.
• Palate: The palate is full-bodied, with creamy walnut notes and sweet sultanas. Plums, orange peel and cherry compote add to the fruit, while cinnamon brings spice. Hints of apricot and toasted oak complete the palate.
• Finish: A delicate, spicy cinnamon note emerges on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

PUNI is located near Glurns in South Tyrol’s Vinschgau valley. The Ebensperger family founded the distillery in 2010 and named it after the River Puni. Distillation began in 2012 following two years of construction; its first whiskies, NOVA and ALBA, were released in 2015. In its early years, PUNI used a mixture of malted barley, malted rye and malted wheat. Since 2016, production has focused mainly on barley malt alone.

PUNI uses five vats made from local larch wood for fermentation. The wort ferments in them for up to 96 hours. Its two copper pot stills are heated with superheated water rather than steam, allowing particularly precise control of the distillation temperature. The climate also plays a part in maturation: warm summers and cold winters create pronounced temperature fluctuations in the warehouses.
