Wines from southern Baden and fruit brandies from the Black Forest form the foundation of this red vermouth. Belsazar Red combines a Muskateller cuvée and a red wine cuvée with herbal extracts and regional grape must. The wines come from the Kaiserstuhl and Markgräflerland regions. Alongside sweetness, the grape must contributes its own flavour; added wine brandy raises its alcohol content and thus prevents fermentation. The oak-aged dosage of grape must, sweet reserve and high-strength alcohol contributes sherry-like grape and wood notes. Schladerer fruit brandies complete the blend.

The herbal extracts are prepared in large glass demijohns, with wormwood playing a central role. The blended mixture then rests in stoneware vessels. This allows the ingredients to integrate without taking on additional wood flavours.

This ruby-red vermouth balances sweetness with spice and bitter accents. Alongside vanilla, candied orange and dark chocolate, it reveals mace, dark caramel and ripe cherries. Red berries complement its fruity character. It can be enjoyed chilled or in classic cocktails such as the Negroni and Manhattan. Once opened, the bottle should be kept in the refrigerator.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals warm vanilla notes and the scent of candied oranges.
• Palate: On the palate, dark chocolate and cinnamon meet a hint of clove.
• Finish: Fully ripe cherries and spicy notes linger on the slightly bitter finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Belsazar was created by Sebastian Brack and Maximilian Wagner, who worked with the Black Forest distillery Schladerer to develop their vermouth concept. Philipp Schladerer contributed production expertise and the family company's fruit brandies. The distillery in Staufen traces its history back to 1844.

At Schladerer, wines, botanical extracts, fruit brandies and grape must are carefully balanced for Belsazar. The individual botanicals steep in alcohol for different lengths of time to extract their respective aromas. Before bottling, the vermouth is filtered, with flow rate and temperature controlled to balance clarity, flavour and mouthfeel.
