Special Features:

French oak shapes La Escondida Reposado without overshadowing its agave character. This Mezcal Artesanal is made in Oaxaca from 100% Espadín agave and rests in oak casks for up to nine months after distillation. This ageing gives it its amber colour and delicate notes of vanilla, chocolate and tobacco.

Cask ageing adds spicy wood notes to the earthy agave and gentle smoke. The mezcal is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle. A skeletal mermaid on the bottle and orange gift packaging are part of its design.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, dark chocolate and dried tobacco meet a delicate vanilla sweetness.
• Palate: On the palate, French oak brings spicy wood notes and subtle smoke.
• Finish: The long finish leaves restrained smoky and woody notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

La Escondida is backed by Grand Mezcal, whose founder Dario Sanabria helped build the brand. Production is rooted in Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The Espadín agaves used for La Escondida are harvested by hand, typically after seven to ten years.

The agave hearts cook slowly in an earth-covered pit prepared with hot volcanic stones. A horse-drawn stone then crushes the cooked hearts. The mash ferments with regional wild yeasts and local spring water in pine vats, followed by two distillations in small copper pot stills. La Escondida's bottles are also filled, labelled and sealed by hand.
