Special Features:

Lajita combines maturation in oak casks with the traditional addition of an agave caterpillar. This reposado is made from 100% Espadín agave, also known as Agave angustifolia, and distilled in Matatlán in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The clear, pale-gold spirit is presented here at 40% alcohol in a 0.05-litre miniature.

The gusano, commonly called a worm, is actually a larva. Even the miniature bottle contains this characteristic addition. Alongside smoke and agave, Lajita reveals an earthy side, with delicate herbal and mineral notes complementing its character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Smoke leads on the nose, accompanied by cooked agave and delicate, wood-derived vanilla sweetness. Subtle herbal and mineral notes add a fresh, delicate touch.
• Palate: On the palate, agave and smoke combine with a slightly tart sweetness that gradually gives way to warmth on the tongue. The mouthfeel remains soft and light.
• Finish: The finish lingers, leaving a subtle taste of wood smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

Licores Veracruz, S.A. de C.V. is the company behind Lajita. It is based in Córdoba in the state of Veracruz, while the mezcal comes from Matatlán in Oaxaca. Lajita has been part of its range since 1989 and is certified by the Mezcal Regulatory Council.

Production begins with cooking the agave hearts in a covered earthen pit, after which they are crushed and fermented. Lajita is triple-distilled before the mezcal is placed in oak casks to mature. The process thus combines cooking the agave with several rounds of distillation and subsequent wood maturation.
