Special Features:

Caisteal Chamuis Bourbon Barrel is a heavily peated blended malt made from single malts from the Scottish islands. The components initially mature in refill and first-fill American oak hogsheads before being blended and given further maturation in smaller, fresh first-fill bourbon barrels holding 200 litres. The whisky is bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

The finishing period adds fragrant, smoky oak notes to the peaty character and softens the medicinal touches. It also enhances the sweetness and vanilla notes on the palate. This gives the bold island smoke a softer counterbalance without diminishing its defining character.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Bold peat smoke leads on the nose, accompanied by subtle medicinal notes and a hint of brine. Sweet vanilla and gentle oak spice round out the aromas.
  • Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Pronounced smoke combines with sweet vanilla and caramel, complemented by nuances of fresh oak and a little spice.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warming. Smoke lingers alongside oak spice and sweetness, leaving a smooth impression.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mossburn Distillers Ltd is responsible for selecting the peated island malts, blending them and bottling Caisteal Chamuis. A carefully planned second maturation is also part of its approach to other blended malts: for the Signature Casks Series, Mossburn has casks assembled to its own specifications, tailoring the staves and heads to the desired regional character.

The name Caisteal Chamuis refers to Castle Camus, also known as Knock Castle, on Skye’s Sleat peninsula. The earliest parts of the castle were built in the 13th century on the site of an Iron Age fortification. It served as a strategic stronghold for Clan MacLeod. Through its name, the whisky range draws on the history of the Hebrides.
