Monkey Shoulder The Original is a blend of Speyside single malts, made entirely from malt whisky without any grain whisky. William Grant & Sons blends the components in small batches to create a smooth, fruity profile. The malts mature in first-fill bourbon casks: casks that previously held bourbon and are being used to mature Scotch for the first time. The whisky is bottled at 40%.

Orange and vanilla mingle with malty sweetness, honey and caramel. A creamy texture and subtle spice complement this character, while barley sugar and a little jam emerge on the finish. Monkey Shoulder can be enjoyed neat, but was also deliberately developed for mixed drinks. It works, for example, in a highball with ginger ale or an Old Fashioned.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fresh orange peel and mellow vanilla meet sweet malt and a hint of honey.
• Palate: The whisky is smooth and creamy on the palate. Vanilla, orange and honey mingle with caramel and malty sweetness, complemented by gentle spice.
• Finish: Gentle malt notes, barley sugar and a hint of jam linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

William Grant & Sons blends and bottles Monkey Shoulder and also owns the brand. The Scottish family business dates back to 1887, when William Grant and his children built Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown. Its first spirit flowed from the stills on Christmas Day that year. The company remains wholly family-owned. In 2005, it added Monkey Shoulder to its range, a blended malt developed specifically for whisky cocktails.

The name Monkey Shoulder recalls the physical work of the malt men, who once turned germinating barley by hand. This repetitive strain could cause shoulder problems, which gave the whisky its name.
