A finish in a First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrel shapes this eight-year-old blended malt from Campbeltown. That Boutique-y Whisky Company released Batch 4 as part of The End of the World series. It belongs to the category known as Teaspooned Malts; the distilleries involved are not named.

The release comprises 454 bottles, each containing 0.5 litres. The whisky was bottled at 52.3% alcohol, without chill filtration or added colouring. The illustrated label depicts a meteorite impact, reflecting the edition's theme.

Malt, apple and gentle, oily smoke define its character. Wood spices and raspberry leaves complement the fruity and cereal notes.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Subtle, oily smoke with a maritime character appears first. Green apple, wholemeal biscuits and citrus peel then emerge. Black pepper and herbal notes of heather and fern round out the aroma. Pickled lemon and a hint of floral garden herbs add further accents.
• Palate: The whisky is robust and full-bodied on the palate. Malty barley and cereal notes develop into impressions of windfall apples, accompanied by gentle, oily smokiness. Toasted barley and toasted oats meet cider apples and a subtly tarry note of smoke.
• Finish: Charred oak and spice reminiscent of cinnamon bark appear on the finish. A hint of clove, strongly brewed tea and dried herbs complete the aftertaste.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company is an independent bottler that selects whiskies from different distilleries and creates its own blends. Its range also includes releases that depart from their distillery's usual style, alongside whiskies from unnamed producers. The hand-drawn labels tell stories about distilleries and releases or offer hidden clues to their origins.

Campbeltown's rise as an important whisky town in the 19th century relied on favourable local conditions: barley from Kintyre, peat deposits, water from Crosshill Loch and coal from the nearby Drumlemble mine were all available. Its natural deep-water harbour facilitated trade.
