Special Features:

Ferrand Double Cask pairs maturation in French oak with a finish in casks previously used for Pedro Ximénez sherry. This Grande Champagne cognac first matures in oak casks with a capacity of 350 litres. The subsequent PX maturation lasts an average of six to twelve months, depending on the cask, adding chocolate, spice and honey to its character.

This VSOP is made from Ugni Blanc grapes. Fermentation takes five to seven days and is followed by double distillation in a 2,500-litre pot still heated by an open flame. The double maturation draws on a historical cognac technique. Two casks and a portrait of Elie Ferrand VIII on the label commemorate his contributions to cask maturation. The cognac is offered at 42.3% in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Fruity aromas and spicy sweetness lead on the nose. Chocolate-covered prunes and hazelnuts meet balanced woody notes and a hint of vanilla.
  • Palate: On the palate, the PX influence is balanced, with dried fruit, figs, caramel and nutty notes. Fruity sweetness combines with light spice and a very subtle interplay of fruit and acidity.
  • Finish: Honey-like sweetness lingers on the finish alongside spicy and fruity notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Founded in 1989, Maison Ferrand is an independent family-owned company. It cultivates its own vineyards in the Cognac region, primarily in Grande Champagne. As Master Blender, Alexandre Gabriel combines work on current bottlings with research into historical production methods. An in-house research and development team tests approaches drawn from this research in ingredients and maturation.

Ferrand uses traditional copper stills for its cognacs and matures the spirits in both dry and humid cellars in south-western France. These different storage conditions help develop floral and spicy notes, suppleness and liveliness. The house also restores historical stills: coppersmith Gaylord Urbain returns old equipment from Alexandre Gabriel's collection to working condition.
