Special Features:

The elevated limestone vineyards of Vars are central to the story of this old Fins Bois Cognac. Its grapes grew on a plateau around 100 metres above sea level, an unusual altitude for the Cognac region. Grosperrin acquired the Cognac from family stocks preserved over generations. It passed through inheritance in 1982 and again in 2018 before Grosperrin purchased it following lengthy discussions with the heirs. Further maturation in Grosperrin’s humid cellars in Barbezieux brought its rancio character into greater prominence.

This single-cask Cognac was bottled in January 2021 at its natural strength of 56.4%. It belongs to the Héritage range and bears lot number 842. No sugar, caramel or wood-based additives are added. Before bottling, it undergoes only gentle filtration at ambient temperature; Grosperrin does not use chill filtration.

Alongside honey, wax and plums, its aromatic range includes freshly roasted coffee beans, lemon zest and flowers. Black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg meet liquorice, old oak, leather and red wine. Earthy touches complement the soft, velvety overall impression.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, mushroom notes, mocha and liquorice mingle with saline and mineral impressions. Delicate wax, mature honey and subtle candied fruit round out the expressive aromas.
  • Palate: On the palate, the texture recalls wood oil and poached plums. Polished hardwood, honeycomb and mature beeswax meet gentle saline and mineral tones, with subtle candied plums.
  • Finish: The long finish is resinous, with a lean, earthy character. Gentle rancio, honey, wax and mineral notes linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Maison Grosperrin is an independent family business that selects distinctive Cognac stocks, oversees their further maturation and bottles them separately. Jean Grosperrin initially worked as an itinerant distiller and became a Cognac broker in 1992. Seeing exceptional old spirits frequently disappear into large blends, he bought a few casks himself in 1999 and began releasing small bottlings that highlighted their origins and stories.

Guilhem Grosperrin took over the business in 2004. He expanded its stocks with old, family-owned Cognacs and increasingly took responsibility for their continued maturation. In 2012, the house moved into 19th-century cellars on the banks of the Charente in Saintes. Each lot retains its individuality: rather than blending them into a consistent house style, Grosperrin preserves their distinct histories of origin and maturation.
