Meukow VSOP Superior exceeds the usual minimum ageing requirement for VSOP: even the youngest eaux-de-vie in its blend mature for at least five years in oak casks. The careful selection of spirits brings together a rounded character, power and softly integrated tannins. The Cognac is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Beyond its combination of fruit, flowers and bold spice, this VSOP reveals further facets: ripe fruit, raisins and walnuts broaden its aromatic range. On the palate, wine-like and creamy, soft impressions accompany the sweetness of white peach, while cinnamon and a barely perceptible hint of banana add further accents.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, candied orange, apple and plum mingle with the scent of roses.
• Palate: The Cognac is powerful on the palate, with pronounced notes of leather and liquorice. The full body has a wine-like quality and a creamy, soft texture. White peach brings fruity sweetness, accompanied by a touch of cinnamon, further spice and a very subtle hint of banana.
• Finish: Coffee and vanilla linger through the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Meukow's history leads from Silesia to the Charente. From 1850, Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow travelled to France to select eaux-de-vie. On 1 August 1862, the brothers founded their trading house in the town of Cognac. Meukow has belonged to the family-run Compagnie de Guyenne since 1979. The bottle with its sculpted panther was the work of Michel Coste, who introduced the distinctive design in 1993.

Cellar master Anne Sarteaux shapes the house style by selecting and blending eaux-de-vie of different ages. Following the double distillation of the wines, the selected spirits are stored in oak casks and monitored as they mature in the damp, dark cellars. For the house blends, she combines in particular the floral qualities of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne with the fruity and woody contributions of Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Borderies. This work defines the general Meukow style, centred on the interplay of different origins and stages of maturity.
