Special Features:
The Origins Series Box brings together four of the distillery’s core styles—Älv, Berg, Hav and Timmer—in 0.05-litre miniatures. High Coast launched the set in November 2023 as a way to taste all four Origins bottlings together. They are produced batch after batch using consistent recipes.
The selection ranges from the unpeated, bourbon-cask-matured Älv through the lightly peated Hav, with its emphasis on spice and oak, to the smoky Timmer, which is also matured in bourbon casks. Berg provides an unpeated, fruity and sweet counterpoint through its PX sherry casks.
The four components also remain clearly distinguishable in their aromas and flavours. Älv combines vanilla, coconut and cake with pear and apple. Hav brings together clove, nutmeg, oak and light peat. Timmer presents peat and smoke alongside vanilla and citrus, while Berg adds raisins, butterscotch, orange chocolate and dried fruit.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, Älv presents vanilla, coconut and sponge cake, while Timmer contributes peat, vanilla and lemon peel.
- Palate: On the palate, Älv combines sweet vanilla with ripe pear and apple, while Timmer counters with campfire smoke and pronounced vanilla sweetness.
- Finish: Älv has a long finish with sweet vanilla notes. Ash and citrus define Timmer’s finish.
Distillery/Bottler:
High Coast Distillery is located in Bjärtrå on the Ångermanälven river. The company was founded in 2007 by a group of whisky enthusiasts. In 2010, the copper stills arrived, the first warehouse was completed and the first cask was filled. The name changed from Box Destilleri AB to High Coast Distillery AB in 2018. High Coast Distillery produces Älv, Hav, Timmer and Berg itself and bottles the four single malts as its own expressions.
The distillery tailors its methods to produce a fruity new make spirit. Clear wort, French distilling yeast and an average fermentation time of 82.5 hours promote fresh fruit notes. High Coast makes early cuts for its unpeated spirit, while it uses wider cuts for the peated spirit so that more of the phenols responsible for its smoky character pass into the new make. These two distillate styles contribute to the range expressed by the four Origins whiskies.
