The collaboration with Carlos I takes this Dictador to Spain after its long maturation in Colombia. Made from sugarcane honey, the rum dates from 1980 and initially matured for 41 years in its country of origin. It then spent a further 15 months in a 50-year-old Oloroso sherry brandy cask. This release in the 2 Masters series thus brings together Colombian rum maturation and the cask traditions of Brandy de Jerez.

Hernan Parra of Dictador and Ignacio Lozano of Carlos I lead this collaboration. The rum was bottled in July 2022 at 44%. The release comprises 700 numbered bottles. The label bears the golden fingerprints of both Master Blenders, and the bottle comes in a black presentation box with gold accents.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines bold dark chocolate, black cherries and oolong tea. Freshly cut oak meets hints of old books and varnished furniture. Figs with honey complete the aromatic picture.
• Palate: Juicy red apples open the palate, followed by fresh ginger, ripe red cherries and a little milk chocolate. Tropical fruit then emerges, with pineapple in syrup alongside apricots with honey and flaked almonds. Fine strands of sugar and a hint of ginger round out the flavours.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming. Ginger and cedarwood linger alongside candied orange peel coated in dark chocolate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Dictador is rooted in Cartagena on Colombia's Caribbean coast, with a rum-making tradition dating back to 1913. Hernan Parra continues the family's work as its third-generation Master Blender. For the 2 Masters series, Dictador entrusts selected mature rums to partners from other spirits and wine regions. These partners continue the maturation in their own cellars and casks.

Carlos I is made in El Puerto de Santa María in the Jerez region. Local brandy-making practices include slow distillation in copper pot stills and maturation in old American oak Butts previously used for sherry over many years. A biologist, oenologist and Master Blender, Ignacio Lozano brings more than three decades of experience at Osborne. His work encompasses the production and maturation of brandy and sherry.
