Special Features:

Silent Pool Gin combines a pronounced juniper base with a floral, fresh character. Its recipe includes 24 botanicals: lavender and chamomile shape its floral side, while orange and lime contribute citrus notes. Warming spice adds another dimension. Honey from the Albury Estate contributes to the velvety mouthfeel. The gin is offered at 43% in a 0.7-litre bottle.

The ingredients undergo different treatments to extract their aromas. More robust botanicals, such as juniper, liquorice root and cassia bark, are first steeped in base spirit before being added to the still. Delicate flowers and leaves are steeped separately in alcohol; after straining, the aromatic infusion is also added to the still. A basket in the neck of the still holds further ingredients, including orange and lime peel and dried pears. The rising vapour picks up their lighter aromas. A multi-chamber distillation column then allows precise adjustment of the distillate.

The turquoise bottle is decorated with copper-coloured botanical motifs. For a gin and tonic, a classic Indian tonic and a twist of orange zest make suitable accompaniments; the gin can also be enjoyed neat.

Tasting Notes:

• Palate: Juniper leads on the palate, accompanied by lively herbal notes and a distinct, fresh edge.
• Finish: Pear notes emerge on the finish. Honey gives it a rounded, smooth texture.

Distillery/Bottler:

Silent Pool Distillers is based on the Albury Estate in England's Surrey Hills. Derelict farm buildings beside Silent Pool were converted into the distillery. The idea arose among a group of friends in 2013. The spring-fed pool that gives the brand its name, together with its surroundings, provides an important point of reference for the brand and its botanicals.

The equipment includes two copper stills named Juliette and Ophelia, handcrafted by Arnold Holstein on Lake Constance. An old wood-fired steam boiler was also restored as part of the distillery's construction and supplies energy to the copper distillation equipment. Custom-made stainless steel tanks from Slovenia complete the setup.
