Juniper takes centre stage in Sipsmith V.J.O.P. The name stands for Very Junipery Over Proof. It uses twice the quantity of juniper berries found in Sipsmith London Dry Gin, together with a three-stage process: the berries first steep in alcohol for three days, more juniper is added to the still, and an additional portion flavours the alcohol vapour in the Carter Head. These stages reinforce the juniper character in several ways.

The strength of 57.7% accompanies the heightened juniper intensity and makes V.J.O.P. a Navy Strength Gin. Its distinctly dry character lends itself to a Martini or a gin and tonic with Mediterranean tonic water, for example. This version contains 0.7 litres in the tall bottle and comes without gift packaging. Sipsmith introduced the taller bottle design in 2023.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Juniper clearly leads the aroma, with impressions of pine and cedarwood. A subtle orange note adds a zesty accent.
• Palate: Bold juniper comes through first on the palate, joined by pronounced spice and notes of dark chocolate.
• Finish: Juniper remains clearly discernible in the long, dry finish. The flavours feel balanced.

Distillery/Bottler:

Sipsmith was founded by childhood friends Sam Galsworthy and Fairfax Hall alongside spirits expert Jared Brown. Their idea for a small London gin distillery initially encountered a legal obstacle: under the regulations at the time, they could not obtain a licence for their planned 300-litre still. Their initiative helped bring about a change in the rules in 2008. In 2009, the first finished gin recipe was produced on Prudence, their copper still.

The distillery began in Hammersmith and moved to Chiswick in west London in 2014. Sipsmith produces its gin there. As head distiller, Jared Brown also developed the multi-stage juniper process for V.J.O.P.: alongside steeping the berries and adding them to the still, it uses alcohol vapour to extract their flavour.
