Special Features:
Italian Viola fig, bay laurel and Tuscan juniper give this Drumshanbo edition its Mediterranean accent. It was developed jointly by PJ Rigney, founder of The Shed Distillery, and Italian mixologist Bruno Vanzan. Fig notes add fruity sweetness to the interplay of Gunpowder green tea, citrus and spices, while bay laurel contributes balsamic herbal notes.
The gin is slowly distilled in small batches in copper pot stills at The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo. It is offered at 43% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Fresh citrus notes open the nose before ripe fig and the herbal, balsamic note of bay laurel emerge. Subtle juniper and vegetal green tea nuances complete the picture in the background.
- Palate: The gin feels soft and velvety on the palate. The fruity sweetness of fig and grapefruit combines with spice notes and balsamic accents of juniper and bay laurel. Gunpowder tea adds a delicate vegetal nuance.
- Finish: Citrus and spice return in the long finish. Finally, the sweet, aromatic note of purple fig comes to the fore, bringing the finish to a soft close.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Shed Distillery is located in Drumshanbo in Ireland’s County Leitrim, beside Lough Allen and at the foot of Sliabh an Iarainn. PJ and Denise Rigney and their team began the first whiskey distillation there on 21 December 2014. This brought whiskey production back to the province of Connacht after more than a century.
The stills were custom-built for the distillery by German equipment manufacturer Arnold Holstein. Of the five copper pot stills, two are used to make Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin and three for whiskey production; two additional copper columns are used for vodka. When developing his gins, PJ Rigney combines Irish plants with botanicals that have inspired him on his travels.
