Special Features:

Citadelle Original uses the same recipe in this large-format pouch as in the classic bottle. The pouch contains 2.8 litres of gin at 44% alcohol and features a carrying handle and an integrated tap. Maison Ferrand introduced this packaging format in 2023; its contents are equivalent to four 0.7-litre bottles.

The recipe brings together juniper and 18 other botanicals. These include lemon and orange peel, cubeb pepper, coriander, cardamom, violet, angelica root and orris root. The patented progressive infusion process adjusts maceration time and alcohol strength to suit each ingredient, drawing out their individual aromatic qualities. Distillation then takes place in copper stills over an open flame.

Its dry character combines juniper, floral notes and citrus with a spicy closing note. Citadelle Original can be served as a gin and tonic with a twist of lemon zest.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens with delicate floral notes of fresh blossoms, jasmine, honeysuckle and cinnamon. With time, more pronounced herbal impressions emerge, alongside anise, grains of paradise and further cinnamon notes.
• Palate: Juniper initially takes the lead on the palate. Lush citrus notes then unfold, together with a layered flavour reminiscent of fresh blossoms.
• Finish: The finish is rounded and long-lasting. Pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon shape its spicy aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Citadelle belongs to Maison Ferrand and was created in 1996 at the initiative of Alexandre Gabriel. His starting point was the idea of using traditional Cognac stills to make gin as well. Gabriel negotiated with the French authorities for five years before obtaining the necessary permission.

Citadelle is based at Château de Bonbonnet near Cognac in south-western France. The distillery and its adjoining spice room occupy a restored 18th-century stone barn. Some of the juniper comes from its own fields opposite the distillery and is harvested by hand. Nine hand-restored copper stills are used for slow distillation. Various citrus species grow in the orangery, while other aromatic plants are tested for new gin creations.
