Elephant Strength Gin uses the recipe of Elephant London Dry Gin with a much higher concentration of botanicals. Both contain the same 14 ingredients, but the Strength version uses twice the quantity. Together with the 57% alcohol content, this produces a more intense aroma and flavour while preserving the gin's smooth character. Juniper, orange peel, mountain pine and African botanicals are particularly prominent. These include buchu, whose flavour profile recalls blackcurrants. Natural sweetness complements the full-bodied herbal character.

This gift version contains a 0.5-litre bottle and an engraved metal bottle opener. The brown packaging features map motifs and animal illustrations. The handwritten bottle labels carry a bottle number and the name of one of the “Magnificent Seven”, the famous elephant bulls from South Africa's Kruger National Park. In this way, Elephant Gin commemorates these now-deceased animals.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pine and lavender mingle with lively citrus notes. Peppery, spirituous spice, celery and a nutty cumin note add further detail.
• Palate: The palate reveals an intense interplay of pine-like juniper, peppery spice, cumin and floral lavender. A little water brings the herbal notes further forward.
• Finish: The long finish remains spicy, with pine and lavender. Herbal bitterness lingers and becomes particularly noticeable with water or tonic.

Distillery/Bottler:

The idea for Elephant Gin emerged during Robin and Tessa Gerlach's travels in Africa. Encounters with people working to protect elephants inspired the concept of a gin brand combining African plants with wildlife conservation. A conversation Tessa had with Digs Pascoe of the Space for Elephants Foundation in South Africa in 2011 was particularly influential.

Elephant Strength Gin joined the range in 2017. It is produced in Germany in small batches of 600 bottles, using an Arnold Holstein copper still for distillation. The selection of ingredients combines classic gin botanicals with African plants such as devil's claw, buchu, lion's tail, African wormwood and baobab fruit. Elephant Gin supports African elephant conservation projects with 15% of the profit from each bottle.
