Special Features:

Portuguese lemons and gum rockrose give this Hamburg dry gin its distinctive character. Alongside juniper, its botanicals include coriander, rosemary, allspice, lavender and cinnamon. The lemons contribute freshness, while wild-growing rockrose adds lightly resinous and floral accents. Gin Sul is gently distilled in small batches, combining delicate citrus aromas with a full body. Rose petals add further floral accents, while cardamom complements the spice notes.

The miniature contains classic Gin Sul at 43% alcohol in a small stoneware bottle holding 0.05 litres. Its smooth, spicy flavour is accompanied by a subtle orange note. To discover its character, try it neat or with tonic water; a twist of lemon peel or a sprig of rosemary complements its citrus and herbal character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fresh lemon aromas mingle with juniper on the nose. Lavender and rosemary are perceptible as subtle nuances.
• Palate: Fresh impressions meet the spice of coriander, allspice and cinnamon on the palate. Rockrose adds a subtle earthy note. Citrus, lavender and rosemary stand out more than the juniper; the fruity flavour feels light and fresh.
• Finish: The long finish remains fresh, leaving citrus and herbal notes. Delicate cinnamon notes and a subtle sweetness complement the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Gin Sul is made at Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur in Hamburg. Stephan Garbe developed the idea with his wife near Odeceixe on Portugal's Costa Vicentina. The local lemons and the scent of gum rockrose were particular inspirations for the recipe. When plans to establish a distillery in Portugal could not be realised, he chose Hamburg as the production location.

During recipe development, Garbe narrowed the initial selection of 35 botanicals down to 14 so that the individual aromas would remain clearly discernible. For the classic gin, lemon peel is both steeped in alcohol and placed fresh in a botanical basket between the still pot and its head. Rising alcohol vapours pass through this basket, picking up the aromas of the peel. Production therefore combines two different ways of transferring the lemon character to the distillate.
