Himalayan juniper and spring water from the mountain region define Jamun, an Indian dry gin from Kasauli in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Launched in 2022, it is produced in small batches. The botanicals are macerated and then distilled. The recipe includes juniper, coriander, cubeb pepper, cinnamon, mint, orange and lemon peel, and the Malabar plum known in India as jamun. Lemon verbena completes the selection.

Resinous juniper and citrus peel lead the fresh profile. Mint adds to the herbal notes, while cubeb pepper, cinnamon and coriander shape its spicy side. Subtle plum sweetness, dark fruit notes and floral nuances complement its dry character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, resinous juniper and lemon and orange peel mingle with mint and coriander. Plum fruit, cubeb pepper and cinnamon round out the aromas.
• Palate: On the palate, the gin is dry and citrusy, with juniper, lemon peel, orange peel and a gentle herbal sweetness. Cubeb pepper and cinnamon give it pronounced spice.
• Finish: Citrus notes linger in the fresh, lightly herbal finish. Mint accompanies the lingering flavours, while a delicate spicy note leaves warmth in the throat.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mohan Meakin Limited produces Jamun at the historic Kasauli Distillery in the Himalayan foothills; the gin is bottled in Solan. The company's history began in 1855 with the brewery founded by Edward Dyer in Kasauli. Beer production later moved to Solan, while Kasauli remained a distilling site. Mohan Meakin operates several breweries and distilleries and is also known for Old Monk Rum. For Jamun, the company combines Himalayan juniper, regional herbs and spices with Himalayan spring water.
