Juniper takes centre stage in Makar Original Dry Gin. Seven other botanicals complete the recipe: fresh lemon, fresh rosemary, black pepper, coriander seeds, liquorice root, cassia bark and angelica root. The gin is distilled in small batches in the copper still Annie. The seven sides of the specially designed bottle represent juniper’s seven companions, while illustrations of the botanicals adorn the neck.

Makar combines a bold juniper character with herbs and peppery spice. It is bottled at 43% alcohol. For a gin and tonic, serve it with Indian tonic water, ice and a thin slice of mild green chilli. It also works in a classic Martini.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fresh pine and eucalyptus emerge on the nose. Floral notes and the herbal aromas of rosemary are accompanied by a little zesty lemon.
• Palate: Bold juniper dominates the palate, accompanied by citrus notes and savoury spice. Black pepper and a hint of liquorice complement the rounded, balanced mouthfeel.
• Finish: The finish is long, smooth and dry. Angelica root, rosemary and warm peppery spice linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd. in December 2012 to bring single malt production back to Glasgow. They found a former warehouse in Hillington on the outskirts of the city. Before the first whisky, Makar Original Dry Gin launched in October 2014 as the distillery’s first product. Its name comes from Scots and means a poet or bard.

To produce its gin, the distillery uses Annie, a 500-litre copper still with a vapour-infusion attachment and a six-plate column. The equipment arrived at the distillery in August 2014. Makar is distilled seven times, and small-batch production is part of the gin range’s approach.
