Special Features:

Monkey 47 brings together 47 botanicals, including lingonberries, in a Black Forest dry gin. The miniature contains 0.05 litres at 47% alcohol. Its brown apothecary-style bottle bears the distinctive purple label with the monkey motif.

Production begins by steeping the botanicals in alcohol and water before distillation. Alcohol vapour also passes through selected botanicals in a vapour basket. This technique allows delicate floral aromas to be highlighted selectively. Fresh lemon and grapefruit peels are added to the mixture before distillation.

Before being diluted to bottling strength, the spirit rests for approximately 100 days in stoneware vessels. Contact with oxygen during this period helps the aromas harmonise. Local water with a low mineral content is used for dilution. The gin is not chill-filtered and undergoes only coarse sheet filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, lime zest, lime syrup and lemongrass mingle with eucalyptus and the scent of a spruce forest. A hint of lavender adds another dimension. A little water brings out more of the resinous scent of freshly sawn pine.
• Palate: On the palate, lively lime notes meet resinous pine and eucalyptus. Herbal notes, liquorice and cardamom round out the flavour. With water, the lime becomes even more prominent.
• Finish: Lime, lemongrass and pine shape the long finish. Cardamom spice also lingers.

Distillery/Bottler:

Monkey 47 is made by Black Forest Distillers GmbH in Lossburg in the Black Forest. Alexander Stein founded the company to realise his vision of a gin with botanical complexity. The number 47 refers to the number of ingredients used.

At the Schaberhof, selecting and preparing botanicals is part of the daily work. The ingredients undergo sensory assessment, and bitter orange, lemon and grapefruit peels are processed fresh. Highly rectified alcohol made from molasses provides the base. Combining this base with local spring water and different extraction techniques shapes the distillery's approach.
