Raspberry takes centre stage in Rubus Gin. Each 0.5-litre bottle uses 200 grams of the fruit. The recipe contains ten botanicals in total, including juniper, coriander seeds, lavender, cardamom, orange and grapefruit peel, and gooseberries. The raspberries and gooseberries come from the Kaiserstuhl, while the citrus fruit comes from Sicily.

This New Western Dry Gin is bottled at 42% alcohol without colouring or chill filtration. At low temperatures, its essential oils can cause natural cloudiness. Rubus can be enjoyed neat, in cocktails or with tonic; serving it with tonic, raspberries and a sprig of mint echoes its fruity character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is sweet and floral, with raspberry as the defining impression. Dark forest berries and orange blossom add further notes.
• Palate: The gin is soft and gentle on the palate, with berry sweetness. Juniper and coriander seeds mingle with lavender and cardamom. Orange and grapefruit peel, together with gooseberry notes, complement the fruit with citrus and spicy accents.
• Finish: Raspberry remains clearly present throughout the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Rubus grew out of a collaboration between bartenders Alexander Mayer and Leopold Langer and distiller Florian Faude. They wanted to create a berry gin with natural fruit flavour and spent around nine months developing the recipe together. In 2016, they launched the gin for Panama Papers.

Rubus is distilled at Faude Feine Brände in Bötzingen in the Kaiserstuhl. Florian Faude, a trained winegrower, founded the small distillery in 2006. For his fruit brandies, he works with hand-selected fruit and individual varieties, including seeking out old fruit varieties. Alongside classic fruit brandies, his range includes citrus and vegetable spirits made by maceration and redistillation. This experience with different plant ingredients provides the background to his work on Rubus Gin.
