Tuscan red wine barriques give this ten-year-old GlenAllachie its distinctive character. The single malt initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels made from American oak. It then spent more than two years in wine barriques selected by Master Distiller Billy Walker at the Grattamacco estate. This finishing period forms part of its total age of ten years.

Grattamacco lies in Tuscany's Bolgheri wine region and was the second winery established there. Previously used for Super-Tuscan red wine, the barriques complement the distillery's fruit-forward character with blackcurrants and sweet tannins. Other notes in this release recall pink grapefruit, wild honey, raspberry jelly and sweet spices.

This limited bottling belongs to the second release of the Wine Cask Series, introduced in October 2023. The ten-year-old Grattamacco had a release size of 2,600 cases at the time. The whisky is bottled at 48% alcohol, without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, dark chocolate, butterscotch and heather honey come together. Blackcurrants, caramelised brown sugar and cinnamon add to the sweet, spicy aromas.
• Palate: The palate first reveals ripe red berries, grapefruit and toasted honeycomb. These are followed by butterscotch, sugared fruit and black truffle.
• Finish: The long, fruity finish leaves lingering wine notes and ripe fruit. A warm oak note accompanies the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

GlenAllachie is a distillery in Scotland's Speyside region. William Delmé-Evans designed the facility, built in 1967, to use gravity in as many production stages as possible, reducing energy requirements. Production first began in 1968. In 2017, Billy Walker, Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson acquired the distillery from Chivas Brothers. After its whisky had previously been used mainly in blends, the first core range of its own single malts followed in 2018.

Today, GlenAllachie uses eight stainless-steel washbacks and a fermentation time of 160 hours to encourage the formation of esters and other aroma compounds. This is followed by double distillation. Warehouses on the distillery grounds are available for maturation. There, Billy Walker and his team monitor the whiskies' development and decide when a move to another cask type is appropriate or when the desired balance between spirit and wood has been reached. The Grattamacco release combines this cask management with Walker's selection of European wine casks.
