Special Features:

This Balblair matured for 32 years in a single Refill Sherry Butt, a sherry cask previously used to mature whisky. It was distilled on 1 October 1990 and bottled on 28 November 2022 from cask 4169 for Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice series. Batch 23/013 comprises just 114 bottles at a cask strength of 58.2%. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no colouring.

Dried fruit and fruitcake contrast with spicy, citrus and roasted notes. Leather and charred oak complete the profile of this long-matured Highland malt. The bottling is presented in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, stewed raisins and Medjool dates mingle with gentle aniseed. Fresh ginger is followed by orange peel and aged leather.
  • Palate: On the palate, white pepper balances autumnal spices and fruitcake. Blackcurrant and roasted coffee beans emerge alongside charred oak.
  • Finish: The finish is full and long, with lingering citrus fruit and plum skin.

Distillery/Bottler:

Balblair Distillery in Edderton, Ross-shire, was founded in 1790 and is one of Scotland's distilleries with roots in the 18th century. The railway influenced its development: the distillery later moved to a site immediately beside the railway line. Balblair produced the spirit for this Highland single-cask bottling.

Gordon & MacPhail has been rooted in Elgin since 1895. The company matures spirits from Scottish distilleries in its own casks, made to its specifications; knowledge of how spirit and cask interact has been passed down through four generations. For this Balblair, Gordon & MacPhail oversaw the long maturation and independently bottled the whisky from cask 4169 in 2022. George Urquhart created Connoisseurs Choice in 1968 to make the individual characters of Scottish distilleries available as single malts, including distilleries whose whisky had not previously been available as a single malt.
