Special Features:

This Caol Ila matured for 31 years in Refill Sherry Butt 13702. The Islay Single Malt was distilled on 30 September 1991. Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky on 30 November 2022 at 55.5% as batch 23/004 of Connoisseurs Choice. The single cask yielded 432 bottles.

Its smoky character brings together savoury impressions, fruity sweetness and spice. Citrus peel and charred oak provide a contrast, while walnut shapes the finish. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in a wooden box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoked meat, cinnamon and brown sugar mingle with orange peel, spiced apple and raspberry jam.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet smoke meets white pepper, which balances the sweetness. Citrus peel stands out clearly, accompanied by charred oak.
• Finish: The finish is long and full, with notes of walnut.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caol Ila lies near Port Askaig on Islay's east coast, looking across the strait towards the island of Jura. Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, the distillery takes its name from the Gaelic for “Sound of Islay”. Its tall copper pot stills produce a comparatively light spirit. A significant part of its production goes into Johnnie Walker blends.

Gordon & MacPhail traces its roots to a shop in Elgin established in 1895. In the 1960s, George Urquhart developed Connoisseurs Choice to make whiskies from different distilleries available as Single Malts at a time when blends still dominated the market. For this range, Gordon & MacPhail selects, matures and bottles spirits from distilleries including Caol Ila, with a focus on each distillery's individual character.
