Special Features:

Forty years of maturation in a Refill Sherry Hogshead make this Glen Mhor a whisky from before its distillery closed. Distilled in 1982, the Single Malt matured in cask number 72. Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky on 2 March 2022 at its cask strength of 50.8%. The single cask yielded 174 bottles for worldwide sale.

Within the Private Collection, this bottling formed part of the launch of the Recollection Series in 2022. The series focuses on whiskies from closed Scottish distilleries, selected by members of the Urquhart family. The whisky was neither chill-filtered nor coloured. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals a pronounced sherry influence with roasted hazelnuts and subtle milk chocolate. Sour cherries and toffee with dark sugar syrup also develop.
• Palate: On the palate, intense stewed-fruit notes give way to pressed apple and Demerara sugar. Raspberry compote is accompanied by gentle white pepper and a hint of dried tobacco.
• Finish: The finish is full, with lingering citrus notes and summer fruits.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Mhor was built in Inverness in 1892 and was the sister distillery of Glen Albyn. A distinctive feature of its production was the use of Saladin boxes, in which the barley was malted mechanically. This technique remained in use until its own maltings closed in 1980. Glen Mhor ceased production in 1983, and the distillery was demolished in 1986.

Gordon & MacPhail began in 1895 as a grocery shop founded by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Elgin. The family business developed a specialism in selecting and maturing Single Malt. In its sample room, it keeps whiskies from different distilleries and of different ages, using past results to inform future maturation decisions. For cask selection, the team regularly travels to Jerez and works with the Speyside Cooperage in Craigellachie. The Private Collection is selected by the directors, including members of the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family.
