This single-cask Speymalt bottling began as new make distilled at Macallan on 10 November 1950 and filled into refill sherry butt no. 1684. After 58 years of maturation, Gordon & MacPhail bottled the whisky on 29 September 2009 at 43%.

The long maturation produced a mature yet nuanced character: dried fruit and old wood sit alongside leather, wax and polish, while earthy spices and a delicate hint of peat smoke complement the fruit. The whisky contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sultanas, prunes and figs mingle with old leather, waxed wood, oily furniture polish, baking spices and baked red apple.
• Palate: The whisky feels silky, soft and deep on the palate. Toasted malt, rich dark fruitcake and creamy caramel meet rum-soaked raisins, red fruit, liquorice, old leather, oily furniture polish and gentle baking spices with an earthy character.
• Finish: The finish is medium to long, with dried red apple, currants, figs, baking spices, old leather and liquorice. Delicate earthy peat smoke lingers alongside hints of old dark rum and dried fruit.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824 and stands on an estate above the River Spey. The new make for cask 1684 was distilled there in 1950. The whisky initially matured in this cask at the distillery.

Gordon & MacPhail began in Speyside in 1895 as a grocery, wine and spirits merchant and developed over several generations into a specialist in selecting distillates and maturing them in carefully chosen casks. The company arranged for cask 1684 to be filled in 1950. After many years at Macallan, the whisky arrived in this cask at Gordon & MacPhail’s warehouses in Elgin, where it remained under the company’s care until it was bottled in 2009. The independent bottler uses the Speymalt name for its Macallan bottlings.
