A finish in Italian Amarone casks shapes this single grain whiskey from the Fercullen Estate Series. The Mill House opens the three-part series and brings together whiskeys distilled by Noel Sweeney in 2010, 2011 and 2012. They first matured in first-fill Bourbon Barrels. After the whiskeys were married, they spent a further 18 months in Amarone casks.

These maturation stages combine the grain character with bourbon, oak and Amarone influences. The whiskey was bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Spices, liquorice and vanilla appear on the nose before honey joins them with a citrus note of lemon. Ripe peach, kiwi, cinnamon and oak complete the aromas.
• Palate: The whiskey feels silky and soft on the palate. Honey and cinnamon lend sweetness, accompanied by a fruit cocktail and milk chocolate.
• Finish: Fruity sweetness and a velvety texture linger through the long finish. It feels almost juicy, yet ends dry.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fercullen comes from Powerscourt Distillery on the Powerscourt Estate in Ireland. The edition name The Mill House recalls the almost 300-year-old mill building made of Wicklow granite. It was converted into the visitor centre, with the original turbine by Craig and Sons of Belfast preserved. The spring water that once powered the mill is now used to make Fercullen whiskeys.

At the modern distillery, grain for single malt and pot still production is milled on site. This allows the team to inspect the whole grains and adjust the grind for each distillation. The equipment, designed and built by Forsyths, allows both double and triple distillation. Powerscourt Distillery opened in 2018.
