Special Features:
A finish in a small Oloroso Octave cask shapes this Invergordon from The Octave range. Following its earlier maturation, the Single Grain gained its final cask influence here. In this small cask format, the internal wood surface area relative to the volume of liquid is greater than in a large cask, allowing a more intensive exchange between whisky and wood.
Duncan Taylor selected this bottling to mark Kirsch Import's 50th anniversary. The whisky was distilled on 20 March 2009 and bottled on 15 September 2026 after 17 years of maturation. Cask 5250479 yielded 82 numbered bottles, each containing 0.7 litres. Bottled at its natural cask strength of 55.5%, the whisky is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose recalls crumbly butter biscuits, toffee and caramel, joined by delicate grain notes and creamy vanilla. Fruity nuances suggest raisins and other dark fruits, while nutty notes remain subtle.
- Palate: The palate reveals a powerful, rounded sweetness with vanilla, caramel, dark raisins and other dried fruits. Pronounced oak spice and noticeable tannins provide a dry, bitter contrast.
- Finish: The long finish opens with vanilla, toffee and sweet raisins. It becomes drier as it develops, leaving nuts and spicy oak alongside the raisins.
Distillery/Bottler:
Invergordon Distillery stands on the Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1959, it began operating in 1961. To produce its Single Grain, the distillery uses tall distillation columns rather than the copper pot stills customary for Single Malt. Its water comes from Loch Glass. Continuous distillation is part of the distillery's production process; the independent bottler Duncan Taylor, however, is responsible for this edition's Oloroso finish.
For The Octave range, Duncan Taylor gives already matured whiskies a second period of maturation in small casks. Large Butts are dismantled, their staves shortened and reassembled into Octaves holding approximately 60 to 70 litres. This further maturation is monitored in the warehouses in Huntly. The process is used across the range for Single Malts, Single Grains and Blended Malts.
