Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 44.5% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
This Cask Craft bottling combines heavily peated Croftengea single malt from Loch Lomond Distillery with a dual fortified-wine finish. For the finishing period, Murray McDavid divided the whisky between Port and Madeira barriques before bringing the two parcels back together.
Peat smoke, fresh fruit and creamy sweetness form the core character. The fortified-wine casks add red fruit, nuts and sweet oak spice. Grilled tropical fruit and a sweet hickory note create a bold contrast to the lingering smoke, while cherries, dark forest berries, roasted nuts and delicate wood spice broaden the profile.
The single malt is bottled at 44.5% alcohol in 0.7-litre bottles. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose combines pronounced dark smoke with ripe berries and cherries. A creamy sweetness reminiscent of cream candy rounds out the aroma.
- Palate: On the palate, robust peat smoke and grilled tropical fruit meet ripe cherries and dark forest berries. Roasted nuts and delicate wood spice give structure to the soft texture.
- Finish: The finish remains smoky for a long time, with bright, sweet fruit lingering afterward.
Distillery/Bottler:
Loch Lomond Distillery in Alexandria can create numerous spirit styles through its use of different stills, cut points and levels of peat. Alongside conventional swan-neck stills, it uses straight-neck pot stills fitted with copper plates and cooling rings, allowing precise control of reflux and spirit cuts. Croftengea sits at the heavily peated end of this spectrum and is only occasionally bottled as a single malt in its own right.
Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. The independent bottler was an early proponent of finishing Scotch whisky in a variety of casks, particularly former wine casks. Murray McDavid is now based at the former Coleburn Distillery in Speyside; the combined Port and Madeira finish used for this Croftengea reflects its cask-focused approach.
