Special Features:

The Time Capsule brings together three different expressions of cask maturation at Glengoyne. It contains the twelve-year-old single malt at 43%, White Oak at 48% and the fifteen-year-old single malt at 43%. Each bottle contains 0.2 litres, giving a total of 0.6 litres.

The twelve-year-old Glengoyne matures in former sherry and bourbon casks made from European and American oak. White Oak matures in first-fill bourbon casks and new American oak casks. The cask selection for the fifteen-year-old Glengoyne includes first-fill sherry and first-fill bourbon casks. This offers a comparison within a single distillery of how different maturation choices shape fruit, baked notes and oak spice.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The twelve-year-old Glengoyne brings coconut and honey together with citrus peel and oak. The aromas also recall coconut oil, lemon zest and dry oak. White Oak has aromas of vanilla, oak and citrus fruit, accompanied by sponge cake, spices and a hint of violet. Vanilla cream, sponge cake, crisp red apple, ginger and unripe banana complement the lively oak aroma. The fifteen-year-old Glengoyne has a persistent nose of hay, malt, citrus fruit and dried fruit. Fresh hay, malt flour, rose hips and citrus peel give these impressions definition.
  • Palate: The twelve-year-old Glengoyne combines caramelised apple with ginger and shortbread. Toffee apple and orange add to the flavours. White Oak brings together crème brûlée, candied lemon and pineapple on the palate. It feels soft and playful, with fruit gummies, jam cake and tinned pineapple. The fifteen-year-old Glengoyne is delicate on the palate, combining gentle sweetness with a hint of tropical fruit, candied lemon, cinnamon, vanilla and apple pie.
  • Finish: The twelve-year-old Glengoyne has a long finish with gentle spices. A hint of sherry, gentle oak and cinnamon spice complement the balanced aftertaste. White Oak has a rounded finish with plenty of toasted oak and caramel. The fifteen-year-old Glengoyne has a dry finish marked by gentle spices and lingering oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Founded in 1833, Glengoyne is located in Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow. The distillery produces all three single malts in the set and has belonged to Ian Macleod Distillers since 2003.

The barley is dried with air rather than over peat smoke. Glengoyne distils particularly slowly, allowing the spirit plenty of time in the stills. For the three whiskies in the set, fermentation lasts 56 hours, followed by double distillation using three stills. Cask preparation also plays an important role: preparing the distillery's casks takes six years.
