For A Tale of Spices, Glenmorangie first matured in bourbon casks was given secondary maturation in four different cask types for the first time: Moroccan red wine casks made from French oak, new charred oak casks, scraped and toasted red wine casks, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Dr Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Gillian Macdonald developed the limited edition with the aromas of a spice market as their inspiration. The cask types contribute in different ways to sweet spice, fruit and sherry depth, while floral notes remain discernible. The whisky is bottled at 46%.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, rose, clove blossom, jasmine and lilac mingle with cumin, saffron, nutmeg, ginger, chilli and anise. Sweet oak and chestnut join them; a few drops of water bring out delicate fruit, menthol and bread dough.
• Palate: On the palate, ginger, black pepper and mustard seed bring bold, earthy spice. A softer sweetness of mint toffee, Demerara sugar and sugared almonds sits alongside it, while eucalyptus adds a fresh accent.
• Finish: The finish stays spicy for a long time, with clove and leather lingering alongside cool peppermint.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenmorangie distils its single malt in Tain in the Scottish Highlands. William and Anne Matheson founded the distillery in 1843; its unusually tall stills contribute to the distillate’s fragrant, fruity character. For A Tale of Spices, Dr Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Gillian Macdonald devised the combination of four secondary maturations. The whisky is an official Glenmorangie bottling. MacDonald & Muir Limited owns and markets the brand.
