Special Features:

Distilled in 1964, this Lochside combines malt and grain whisky produced at the same site. After 60 years of maturation in sherry casks, Duncan Taylor bottled it on 12 April 2024 at a cask strength of 45.3%. Only 30 bottles were offered for the release. Bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration, it belongs to the Rarest Edition Collection; its exceptional age and origins at a long-closed distillery make it a historic blended Scotch rarity. It was bottled exclusively for The Spirits Embassy.

Woodland fruits, wild strawberry, raspberry and blackberry meet liqueur-filled chocolates, old leather and mature sherry. A subtle savoury soy note adds another dimension. Oak, sweetness and spices shape the palate, while earthy rancio recalls very old Cognac. Chocolate and dense fruit sustain the long, spicy finish without excessive dryness.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose is rich and fresh, with woodland fruits, wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Liqueur-filled chocolates, old leather and mature sherry complement the fruit, while a tiny hint of aged soy sauce adds a savoury accent.
  • Palate: Despite its considerable age, the whisky remains fresh on the palate, with a dense texture and moderate fruitiness. Oak takes the lead, with sweetness in the background. Cardamom, clove and cinnamon add spicy accents, while earthy rancio recalls very old Cognac.
  • Finish: The finish is very long and warming, without excessive tannins or dryness. Liqueur and chocolate notes become more prominent, combining with dense fruit and balanced spices in a powerful finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochside was established in 1957 in a former brewery in Montrose on Scotland’s east coast. Joseph Hobbs initially had a Coffey still installed for grain whisky; four pot stills for malt whisky followed in 1961. This enabled the distillery to produce both components of a blend itself. At times, the new-make spirits were blended before being matured together in casks. Production ended in 1992.

Duncan Taylor stored the stocks for this edition in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, and released the 60-year-old Lochside as part of its Rarest Edition Collection. These rare bottlings draw on an extensive private collection of Scotch whisky, whose development was shaped by both former owner Abe Rosenberg and current chairman Euan C. Shand.
