This 25-year-old Highland single malt initially matures for 22 years in American oak ex-bourbon casks. Spanish Oloroso sherry casks then take over the maturation until it reaches 25 years of age. The bourbon phase brings spicy sweetness and warm vanilla, while the Oloroso phase adds depth, colour and dried fruit.

Its aromatic spectrum ranges from bold spices, dark chocolate and rum-soaked raisins to lime honey, orange peel and baked apple, followed by bitter chocolate, creamy vanilla, toffee, fresh lemon and coconut. Tropical fruit and mature wood complete the profile, while dried-fruit cake and exotic wood lead into the long, spicy aftertaste.

The whisky is bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring. Zesty citrus provides a fresh counterpoint to dark chocolate and mature wood, while a salty nuance and the long, maritime finish emphasise its coastal character.

Distillery/Bottler:

Old Pulteney 25 is an official bottling from Pulteney Distillery. James Henderson founded the distillery in 1826 in the port town of Wick on Scotland’s north-eastern coast. Its water comes from Loch Hempriggs, and unpeated barley is used to make the whisky. An unusually shaped wash still and the traditional worm-tub condenser contribute to the new make spirit’s aroma, body and depth. The American and Spanish oak casks rest in cool, humid, stone-walled warehouses exposed to Wick’s coastal climate.
