Special Features:
This set brings together two age expressions from Glenfiddich, the Speyside distillery. It contains a 0.7-litre bottle of the 15-year-old Solera, a 0.05-litre miniature of the 18-year-old and a tumbler, presented in gift packaging. The total whisky volume is 0.75 litres.
The 15-year-old Solera combines influences from sherry, bourbon and new oak casks. The matured whiskies are then married in a large Solera Vat made from Oregon pine. This vessel is never emptied completely and always remains at least half full, allowing some of the previous marriage to blend with the newly added whisky.
The 18-year-old combines the fruity sweetness imparted by Spanish Oloroso casks with the oak character of American casks. The whiskies are brought together in small, individually numbered batches and, after marrying, spend at least three months together in wooden vessels. Baked apple, spice and pronounced oak shape its character, offering a comparison with the honeyed, spicy Solera.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Glenfiddich 15 Year Old combines heather honey and vanilla fudge with dark fruit on the nose. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old has aromas of ripe pome fruit and spiced apple, accompanied by a pronounced oak note.
- Palate: Glenfiddich 15 Year Old is silky and full-bodied. Sherry-influenced oak and marzipan meet cinnamon and ginger. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old brings together dried fruit, candied citrus peel and dates alongside subtle oak notes.
- Finish: Glenfiddich 15 Year Old has a rich finish with lingering sweetness. The finish of Glenfiddich 18 Year Old is warming.
Distillery/Bottler:
Glenfiddich is located in Dufftown in Scotland’s Speyside region. William Grant began building the distillery in 1886, working alongside his nine children. The first spirit flowed from its stills on Christmas Day 1887. Glenfiddich means “Valley of the Deer” in Gaelic. William Grant & Sons remains entirely family-owned.
The distillery maintains its copper stills with the help of its own coppersmith and cares for its casks in an on-site cooperage. Wooden marrying vessels also play an important role: matured whiskies are brought together in them before being bottled as a single expression.
