Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 60.9% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
A single bourbon cask and 22 years of maturation shape this smoky single malt from Tasmania. The American oak cask, numbered 4082.07, originally held 200 litres and had previously been used at Jack Daniel’s. At Hellyers Road, it was used as a first-fill cask for whisky maturation. The whisky was distilled in 2004 and bottled in 2026 at a cask strength of 60.9%, without chill filtration or added colouring.
Hellyers Road used Tasmanian Gairdner barley for this release. Fermentation lasted approximately 50 hours before distillation in a pot still. The whisky combines sweet stone fruit and tropical fruit with peat smoke and earthy accents.
La Maison du Whisky selected the cask exclusively for the Collection Anthology. The release yielded 175 bottles in total, with only 20 allocated to Australia and New Zealand. The presentation brings together whisky and Tasmanian art: Craig Williams uses old book pages as the background for his artwork, and a penguin appears on this release. The whisky comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose evokes an upside-down peach tart beneath a veil of gentle smoke. Fresh pineapple, mango and honey are joined by delicate hints of citrus.
- Palate: On the palate, sweet apricots, peaches and mango contrast with peat smoke. The smoke’s sweet side and earthy notes accompany the juicy fruit.
- Finish: Gentle smoke lingers through the long finish.
Distillery/Bottler:
Hellyers Road is located near Burnie in north-western Tasmania. The distillery grew out of a dairy cooperative in 1997, with roots reaching back to 1956. Descendants of the original farming families remain involved in the company. The region’s cool maritime climate, marked by high humidity and relatively small temperature fluctuations, provides the setting for prolonged cask maturation.
Barley processing stays at the distillery site, where the grain is milled, mashed, fermented and distilled. The current head distiller, Fiona Coutts, has a background in microbiology, biochemistry and quality control. Hellyers Road has worked with La Maison du Whisky since 2010, a partnership that produces selected single-cask releases and joint collections.
