Special Features:
With Dekolaj by Kongo, Neisson brings together single-plot rhum agricole and contemporary art. Cyril Kongo designed the deep-blue bottle for this edition. It contains the original Dekolaj from Clos Godinot and carries the AOC Martinique designation.
Clos Godinot lies above Le Carbet at an altitude of 245 metres. On its 35-degree slope, pronounced temperature differences encourage sugar accumulation in the cane. For this bottling, fresh sugar cane juice is fermented for 119 hours before being distilled in a column still. The white rum is bottled without cask ageing at 52.5% in 0.7-litre bottles and comes without gift packaging.
Alongside its distinctly fruity character, the rum displays citrus notes and sugar cane aromas. The name Dekolaj draws on a Martinican term for the first rum of the morning.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose is rich and soft, with cherries and blackcurrants. With aeration, sugar cane juice emerges, followed by sugar cane flowers.
- Palate: The opening is peppery. Intense geranium and carnation flowers then mingle with pears, mirabelle plums and fresh sugar cane juice. Towards the end, a sweetness reminiscent of warm cane sugar softens the palate.
- Finish: The long, juicy finish carries the palate’s impressions forward with a texture reminiscent of sugar cane fibres. Menthol freshness accompanies the sugar cane juice, while medicinal, balsamic notes emerge on the exhale.
Distillery/Bottler:
Neisson has its roots in the Thieubert estate in Le Carbet. Adrien Neisson bought land there in 1931 and planted sugar cane; in 1932, he established the distillery with his brother Jean. Jean brought his training as a chemical engineer to production. In 1995, his grandson Grégory Vernant and Grégory’s mother, Claudine Neisson Vernant, took responsibility for the family business.
Neisson uses its own yeasts, obtained from sugar cane, for fermentation. At the heart of distillation is an all-copper Savalle column dating from 1952, whose design Jean Neisson further developed. It is dismantled and inspected every year. Bottling also takes place on site at the distillery.
