An additional period of cask maturation after blending shapes Nikka From The Barrel. More than a hundred malt and grain whiskies are brought together for this bottling, principally malt whiskies from Nikka’s two Japanese distilleries and Coffey-distilled grain whiskies. The blend then spends a few more months in previously used casks. Known as marriage, this process allows the different components to come together, combining aromatic power with a rounded mouthfeel.

The blend contains imported whiskies as well as Japanese whiskies, so its composition extends beyond Japan. It is bottled at 51.4% in the distinctive angular bottle, designed to evoke a compact block of whisky.

The gift set contains a 0.5-litre bottle, two tall Nikka glasses and a pourer. The hinged presentation box combines black surfaces with a light green accent. Fruit, flowers and spice define the whisky, with a subtle smoky nuance adding to its profile.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, lilac and apricot mingle with cloves and delicate leather notes. The aroma is complex and refined.
• Palate: The whisky is powerful and firmly structured on the palate. Pepper and oak meet peach, caramelised apple and floral hints of honeysuckle.
• Finish: The long finish combines maritime impressions with plum, oak and vanilla.

Distillery/Bottler:

In 1934, Masataka Taketsuru founded the company that would become Nikka. Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido was completed that same year. A second distillery, Miyagikyo near Sendai, followed in 1969. From The Barrel has been part of the range since its introduction in 1985.

The two distilleries give Nikka different options for its blends. Yoichi uses directly coal-fired pot stills, while Miyagikyo operates larger stills heated indirectly by steam. Miyagikyo also houses traditional Coffey stills for continuous distillation. This older design retains more grain flavour and richness than modern equipment geared more strongly towards efficiency.
