Special Features:
Three cask types shape this first release in the Six18 Step Collection. The whiskey initially matures in former bourbon Barrels before receiving a finish in sherry casks previously filled with Pedro Ximénez. A portion then spends a short additional period in a cask that previously held peated whisky. This lends a restrained smoky nuance without overshadowing the fruity character.
Malted and unmalted barley form the base, with triple distillation taking place in copper pot stills. This process gives the Single Pot Still whiskey its silky character. The bourbon casks contribute vanilla and gentle sweetness, while the PX casks add dried-fruit notes and a velvety richness. The whiskey is bottled at 43% in a 0.7-litre bottle.
The cask selection draws on the Skellig Coast: the sherry finish recalls historic maritime trade with ports on the Iberian Peninsula, while the delicate peat influence evokes the region's Atlantic boglands. The bottle design reflects the starry sky above Skellig Michael, which once helped seafarers navigate.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Nutty and caramel notes mingle with oak on the nose. A delicate touch of chamomile complements the aroma.
- Palate: Dried fruit meets papaya and crisp apple on the palate. Fresh jalapeño adds a spicy accent, accompanied by a subtle hint of smoke.
- Finish: The long, balanced finish leaves a lingering warmth.
Distillery/Bottler:
Skellig Six18 is based in Cahersiveen, County Kerry, on Ireland's Atlantic coast. The distillery and its maturation and blending warehouse occupy a former textile factory that later also served as winter storage for boats. Today, whiskey matures there in selected casks before the whiskeys are blended and bottled on site.
The name Six18 refers to the 618 steps carved into the rock leading to the monastery on Skellig Michael. For the Triple Cask release, the team selects casks from its own maturation warehouse. The coastal location and the Atlantic air circulating there underpin the Atlantic Aged maturation concept.
