Special Features:
Copeland Irish Gin brings together classic juniper and botanicals from Northern Ireland’s coastal landscape. The twelve ingredients are organically sourced and include sea thrift from the Copeland Islands, pine needles, peppercorns, and orange and lemon peel. Navel oranges provide the main citrus accent.
The ingredients are freshly weighed for each distillation, and the unwaxed oranges are freshly peeled. The botanicals first steep in alcohol for 16 to 24 hours. This mixture then goes into a 300-litre copper column still, along with additional orange slices and botanicals. After distillation, the gin is diluted with water to 45% and rests for two weeks before being bottled and labelled by hand.
At the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2022, the gin scored 99 out of 100 points and received the Outstanding Gold award as well as the Best Contemporary Gin Trophy. It can be served with tonic and citrus zest or used as a base for cocktails.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, fresh pine notes mingle with floral aromas.
- Palate: The palate reveals sweet berries and herbal botanicals, accompanied by juniper and spice.
- Finish: The finish brings a refreshingly bitter accent.
Distillery/Bottler:
Copeland Distillery is based in Donaghadee, in Northern Ireland’s County Down, near the historic harbour. Its development began in summer 2016 with a crowdfunding campaign: more than 370 supporters contributed a total of £30,000. To create a permanent home for the distillery, the former premises of the Picture House Cinema and the Ards Bottling Company were restored over nine months after standing vacant for more than twenty years.
Three custom-made copper stills are named Betty, Hessie and Pam in honour of founder Gareth’s grandmothers and mother. The distillery uses local ingredients wherever possible: wild botanicals come from the coast, while fruit is sourced from farms in County Down. The offshore Copeland Islands give the brand its name and shape its connection to the region’s coastal landscape.
